[Brendan hasn't smoked since he was a freshman in Drama Club, lounging around backstage with Kara, with whom he would turn the back room into a haze of smoke and shitty poetry and shittier petty thefts on her behalf later on. Sometimes someone would make a snack run and they'd pop cheap Mexican food from downtown and skip sixth period.

He smoked briefly again after Emily broke up with him, but he's a cheap bastard and more than his health he gave up smoking back home because he couldn't afford it. Here, he lifted some out of a gas station brazenly and now he leans against the doorframe and lights one up. He hopes the security cameras at the gas station caught him. He hopes everyone catches him. He hopes they get angry at him so he can get defensive because maybe, just maybe, that'll make him feel something.

Right now he doesn't feel a damn thing and it's eating him up inside in ways he doesn't have words for.]

[archie returns with scout about ten minutes later, the puppy growling and chewing on his arm. he doesn't seem to care. he doesn't comment on the smoking, either. archie isn't a smoker but when he got back from the house he ended up smoking out of pure stress, using nicotine cigarettes because he couldn't find anything else.]

C'mon. We can figure out where to go from here when you've had some rest.
